Technical approach

The MICHAEL project will take the following technical approach:

  • Install a first deployment (instance) of the Michael platform is set in AJLSM in France. This first instance shall be open to all partners for review and feedback. The MICHAEL platform will initially be a copy of the platform used on the French inventory website, but with content describing the MICHAEL project. A sample data set using the MICHAEL data model will be used to populate the site and to allow testing of search and retrieve tools.
  • Minor changes to the user interface are expected to take place, on the basis of feedback from the partners. However, this modification is anticipated to be slight; the existing interface has already been through user acceptance testing for its current installation.
  • Dedale and AJLSM will create guides for localization and data mapping, including full details of the data model as it implements the NRG guidelines.
  • Following initial testing, the major technical effort of the project will begin – the installation, localisation and population of the national MICHAEL instances and their linking to a trans-European MICHAEL portal.
    • A working instance of the MICHAEL portal will be installed in Italy, in France, and in the UK. The French instance will be in addition to the ‘development’ instance used in AJLSM.
    • Each national partner will then localize their own national portal into their own language.
    • National cultural material shall be used to populate the national instances, conforming always to the MICHAEL data model as implemented by AJLSM on foot of the NRG guidelines.
    • Mappings shall be established between existing national databases and the MICHAEL data model.
    • The mappings shall be used to import the national databases into MICHAEL or to allow the MICHAEL portal to query or harvest the national databases.
    • The data importation and data model population will lead to a large, distributed data base spread across multiple countries but conforming to the interface defined for the MICHAEL data model.
    • A central MICHAEL portal will be established by AJLSM and Dedale. This will resemble the national portals except that it will not contain any country-specific background material. Its content will be available in all three languages (English, French, Italian). It will provide inventory services which allow search and retrieval operations over all the national MICHAEL instances.
    • The guidelines produced for localisation and data mapping will be updated to reflect the experience of the project.
