Michael Culture has just been appointed by European Commission to the Commission expert group on cultural heritage. The purpose of this group is to promote public policies that ensure the long-term value and sustainability of Europe's cultural heritage based on an integrated approach.

The first meeting will be mid-October.

European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 (EYCH2018) & it's legacy

The European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 (EYCH2018) has been a great success and has strongly contributed to the recognition of the diversity of CH and of its role on societal challenges.

One of the main output of the EYCH is the The European Framework for Action on Cultural Heritage. It aims to capture and scale-up the success of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. The European Year of Cultural heritage aimed at encouraging more people to discover and engage with Europe's cultural heritage, and to reinforce a sense of belonging to a common European space.

To ensure that the efforts initiated during the Year have a lasting impact beyond 2018, the European Commission has released a European Framework for Action on Cultural Heritage.

Michael Culture contributed to the EYCH by supporting & giving labels to events organized by its members, organizing events, supporting the communication and dissemination of the EYCH, contributing to the Stakeholders committee and advocating for the values components of the CH, by signing the Berlin call and by its strong involvement in the preparation of Culture Action Europe Statement for CH "Fast Forward Heritage".

OVERVIEW OF European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH 2018)
To raise awareness of European history and values and to strengthen a sense of European identity. It encourages more people to discover and explore the opportunities of Europe's rich and diverse cultural heritage. At the same time, it draws attention to the challenges cultural heritage faces, such as the impact of the digital shift, environmental and physical pressure on heritage sites, and the illicit trafficking of cultural objects.
The main objectives 
• to promote cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and social cohesion;
• to highlight the economic contribution of cultural heritage to the cultural and creative sectors, including small and medium-sized enterprises, and to local and regional development • to emphasise the role of cultural heritage in European cultural diplomacy
• to underline the importance of safeguarding our common cultural heritage Initiatives during the EYCH 2018 
Various European Initiatives launched by European commission – linked to priorities have started. 4 areas: engagement, sustainability, protection and innovation
Dedicated financial envelope of 8 million Euro, which is partially financed through the Creative Europe Programme. Through initiatives and events at European, national, regional and local levels. At European level, implementation of the Year will be a joint effort of the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council and also the Committee of the Regions and the European Economic and Social Committee. At country level, the Year is being organised by national coordinators, designated by each EU Member State.

Michael Culture is one of the 38 European Networks participating to the Stakeholders' Committee preparing for the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage who will assist it in implementing the European Year of Cultural Heritage at European level.

The European Year of Cultural Heritage label (comprising a logo, a slogan and a hashtag) is available for activities, events and projects taking place between 7 December 2017 (official launch of the year at the European Culture Forum in Milan) and 31 December 2018.

Who can grant the label :
- National Coordinator in your country - for all projects at national, regional and local levels
- The European Commission - for all EU funded projects via our application form
- The members of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 Stakeholder Committee - for all cross-border projects implemented by the cultural heritage stakeholder organisations

Closing conference of European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018

A closing conference organised jointly by the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Commission. It will showcase projects of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 and discuss the legacy of the year.

22.06.2018, Berlin, European heritage Summit

The Berlin Call to Action "Cultural Heritage for the Future of Europe" is out and can be signed.

This “Berlin Call to Action” is presented at the European Cultural Heritage Summit on 22 June 2018 in Berlin by the 3 co-hosting organisations, EUROPA NOSTRA; the German Cultural Heritage Committee (DNK) and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK).

It aims to build on this EYCH2018 a statement to "recognize and unfold the positive and cohesive power of our shared cultural heritage and values to connect Europe’s citizens and communities and to give a deeper meaning to the entire European project. "

Conference "Innovation and Cultural Heritage"
20 March 2018, Brussels

Digital : a key asset for Cultural Heritage

The High level 2020 conference "Innovation and Cultural Heritage", held in Brussels, Belgium on 20 March, focused the importance of digital innovation in relation to cultural heritage and showcased European projects.

This event was organised by the European Commission Directorate General for Research and Innovation, in close cooperation with Directorates General for Education and Culture and for Communications Networks, Content and Technology

Eurobarometer 2018: The results of the first EU-wide survey on cultural heritage 

On the occasion of the launch of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, a new edition of the Eurobarometer was published during the European Culture Forum on 7th December 2017.

This survey attests the strong relation between European and Cultural heritage.

Prize 2018

European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/ Europa Nostra Awards 2018.


In total 29 winners from 17 countries were selected from 160 applications, submitted by organisations and individuals from 31 countries across Europe. The prize goes to projects in Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia and Spain.

Citizens from around Europe and the rest of the world can now vote online - by 10.06.2018 for the Public Choice Award and mobilise support for the winning achievement(s) from their own or another European country.
